Air India Cancels Dozens of Flights Amid Post-Crash Safety Audit

New Delhi | IP News

Air India has cancelled more than 50 domestic and international flights following the tragic AI-171 Ahmedabad-London crash that killed 241 passengers earlier this week. The cancellations, announced on June 20–21, 2025, are part of a fleet-wide technical review aimed at ensuring passenger safety amid rising concerns over aircraft maintenance and operational oversight.

What’s Happening
The airline confirmed that both international routes (including London, Newark, San Francisco, and Singapore) and domestic sectors (Delhi–Mumbai, Kolkata–Delhi, Chennai–Hyderabad, among others) have been suspended for the next 48 to 72 hours. Affected passengers are being offered refunds or alternative bookings as part of the airline’s crisis protocol.

“These cancellations are precautionary measures. Passenger safety is our top priority,” said an Air India spokesperson.

The AI-171 crash, one of the worst aviation disasters in recent years, has prompted regulatory bodies to initiate independent safety reviews of aircraft fleets across India. Aviation Minister has demanded a report from DGCA, while public criticism has mounted over transparency and response times.

While no clear technical fault has yet been officially disclosed, preliminary reports suggest possible engine failure and delayed emergency response.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to release its initial findings by June 25, 2025.

The ongoing cancellations could affect over 8,000 passengers daily, with ripple effects across the travel industry. Travel analysts note that Air India’s swift action, while disruptive, is crucial to rebuilding public trust.
