AIIMS Raipur has successfully treats complex aortic pathology using minimally invasive “Tevar” procedure

The patient, a 24-year-old female, was diagnosed with aortic dissection

In a major medical milestone, AIIMS Raipur has successfully treated a case of complex aortic pathology using a minimally invasive procedure known as TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair), marking a significant advancement in interventional radiology at the institute.

The patient, a 24-year-old female, was diagnosed with aortic dissection—a life-threatening condition involving a tear in the inner wall of the thoracic aorta, leading to separation of the vessel wall layers. Traditionally, such cases require open chest surgery (thoracotomy). However, in this instance, the treatment was performed through a much less invasive approach using the artery in the thigh, avoiding the need for major open surgery.

Due to the patient’s unusually narrow iliac artery, standard access through the groin was not feasible. The surgical team, therefore, created an alternate route by performing a minor surgical procedure in the lower abdomen to establish an iliac conduit. Through this access, a stent graft was guided under DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography) into the abdominal and thoracic aorta. The stent graft was successfully deployed into the true lumen, effectively sealing the tear and restoring proper blood flow.

This intricate and high-risk procedure was accomplished through the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team of 18 members. The Interventional Radiology team was led by Dr. N.K. Bodhey, while the Cardiac Surgery team was headed by Dr. Nitin Kashyap and Dr. Pranay. The Anesthesia team was led by Dr. Subrat Singh.

Supporting doctors included Dr. Krohit Yadav, Dr. Ameen Ansari, and Dr. Sandeep. Nursing care was provided by Divya S. Nair and Mr. James Victor.

Dr. Bodhey expressed gratitude to his department colleagues—Dr. Saroj, Dr. Manish, Dr. Richa, and Dr. Nihar—as well as to Dr. Vinay Rathore (Nephrology), Dr, Satyajit Singh (Cardiology) and Dr. Chinmay Panda (Critical Care), for their essential contributions.

Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd.), Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Raipur, congratulated the Department of Radiology and all the collaborating departments for this remarkable achievement. He noted that this successful TEVAR procedure adds another proud chapter to the institute’s growing capabilities in advanced interventional radiology.
